Give Your Skin A Detox

We’ve all tried some kind of a detox. From digital detoxes and relationship detoxes, to detox teas or a seven day juice cleanse (we’re talking to you kombucha-obsessed beauty lovers) - detox has been trending in our vocabulary in recent years. We look to a detox when we’ve just had a bit too much and need a break to reset. While many physical internal detoxes are meant to help with weight loss, or to cleanse the body of impurities, we rarely focus on a detox that’s intended specifically for our body's largest organ - our skin. Many detoxes promise to deliver an overall improved complexion, but sometimes we need to go all in and focus directly on the skin. First Thing's First

Our skin health and the way our skin looks is a reflection on what is going on in our lives internally and externally. Our environments, our daily activity and our diet all affect our skin health. A true skin detox has to start from the inside - drinking plenty of water and maintaining a clean, healthy diet to cleanse the body of impurities. This happens because the lower layers of our skin get their nutrients from what we put in our bodies. While a full physical detox isn’t what we’re here to talk about, it’s important to keep this in mind as a first step if you’re ready for a reset.

The other part of this understanding is makeup. Makeup can be an amazing tool to help us feel our best, and give us an extra boost for a night out or even an important day at work. But in makeup’s case, you can have too much of a good thing. Constantly overloading the skin with foundation and blush can clog the pores and allow dirt to settle in throughout the day. Not to mention those makeup brushes that may have gone a bit too long without being cleaned. A facial detox starts with laying off the makeup, whether it be for one week or even one day if that’s what your schedule allows. Choose a timeline where you can commit to going bare-faced and beautiful.     While going in to see an esthetician for a facial will give you a true skin detox, there are many steps that will allow you to detox right at home. Keeping your regular skincare routine is a must when starting a facial detox, and its even more important to make sure you’re properly cleansing. Starting with a double cleanse can jump start the process for you - using the powers of oil and water to pack a double punch. Using an oil based cleanser first to remove makeup residue and impurities, followed by your regular cleanser. If you already use a cleanser with oils in your routine - even better. Our recommendation is our Hydrating Cleanser - a gentle cream wash with a wealth of essential oils to double as a makeup remover giving your skin a fully clean slate.      Because detoxing is all about ridding the body, skin or mind of impurities, exfoliation is key to purifying the skin. Removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin is going to freshen up the face and allow for the rest of your products to soak into the skin - giving you a deeper detox. Using glycolic acid to gently exfoliate will help to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, in turn allowing blocked pores to be freed and cleared. It’s out with the old and in with the new on the surface of your skin. Exfoliating your skin extends beyond your face - dry brushing will help to take this a step further and provide a full skin and body detox. While this should extend past your one day or one week detox period, quickly dry brushing the skin daily will remove dead skin cells and help to stimulate cell renewal even deeper. It also helps to improve overall circulation and stimulates the lymphatic drainage system to release toxins, prompting a natural detox.     If going to a spa is out of the question for you, or you’re just looking to stick to an at-home facial detox, you can create your own steam facial in your kitchen. After cleansing and exfoliating, exposing your skin to steam can open up the pores, allowing more grime to be extracted and allowing your skincare ingredients to provide a deeper impact. For a quick and simple way to use steam to open the pores, bring a pot of water to a boil and transfer the water over to a large bowl. Drape a towel over your head and hover your face over the bowl, allowing the steam to concentrate to your pores for about ten minutes.     Masking is an important step in a facial detox. We often see masking as a relaxing treat, but the benefits to the skin are far greater than relaxation. In detoxifying the skin, masks can be used to exfoliate and draw out toxins. A facial detox is all about jumpstarting your skin’s health. Using probiotics in your skincare can get your skin to where it needs to be, just like drinking the ever-praised Kombucha tea. Our Pom Crush Detox Enzyme Mask is a probiotic powerhouse using fermented fruit enzymes to gently detoxify and boost skin immunity. Some of these enzymes include pumpkin, pomegranate and pineapple. Pumpkin specifically is packed with the alpha hydroxy acids needed to increase cell turnover and soften the skin. While especially popular in the fall, pumpkin can be used year round to detox and soothe the skin with Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Clay masks are praised for their detoxifying benefits to the skin. Natural clay masks extract toxins from the skin without drying it. Our Tulsi Soothing Tri Clay Mask gently decongests the pores using three mineral-rich clays, while working to maintain a smooth, fresh complexion. Also containing the age old mineral rich Illite French clay, the mask buffs away dirt and purifies the pores. Many of us have been conditioned to leave clay masks on until they’re dry and cracking, but it’s best to only leave the mask on until it’s soft to avoid stripping the skin of its much needed oils. -- With a detox done right, you can restore your skin back to health after an especially busy or stressful time - or bring it to glowing levels it has never seen before.
