Why Natural Phthalate-free Fragrance In Your Skincare?

We all love indulging ourselves in divine scents when applying beauty products. However, the safety of scented skincare has become a debatable topic over the years. It is a common misconception that fragrance is to be avoided in skincare. You shouldn’t have to choose between performance quality and safety.

Why Use Fragrance in Skincare

Formulas to create skincare are complex. The truth about non-fragranced products is that they carry an unpleasant smell of chemicals or raw ingredients which in turn has brands creating fragranced products so often. Luckily, skincare companies are able to create formulas without adding harmful fragrance ingredients. At Sonage, we add natural fragrances in our skincare products to evoke a mood or memory by creating an emotional connection to our products and crafting a smell of recognition to the brand.

How We Source Our Ingredients

For our clean beauty enthusiasts, natural fragrances are made exclusively by natural aromatics from a variety of plants. At Sonage, we source from vendors that practice sustainable farming methods such as wild harvesting, the process of collecting herbs or plants where they grow natively. Rather than mass producing sources, we find ingredients in nature and only harvest adequately to maintain sustainability. The aromatic plants are chosen for their botanical benefits and sensory experience.

Natural Fragrances In Our Skincare

Sonage formulates with natural fragrances that, broadly speaking, have three primary scents. Floral Scents, such as our High Endurance Crème, contain the classic mix of rose, ylang ylang, jasmine, orchids, patchouli, lavender, geranium, and vanilla. Citrus Scents, such as our Hydrating Mist, are a gender neutral, easy-to-wear, beachy smell of spring which include ingredients like bergamot, orange blossom, peach, berries, grapefruit, lavender, and cucumber. Woodsy Scents, such as our Collagen Boosting Serum, have a sensory feel of a warm and cozy experience (like sitting by a crackling fireplace). It is generally comprised of notes including helichrysumcedarwood, eucalyptus, clove, fennel, sandalwood, violet, iris, and cardamom.

Harmful Fragrance Ingredients

According to the International Fragrance Association, fragrance formulas typically contain several hundred chemicals, most of them synthetic. One of their studies found that 42 of the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) were found in 37 fragranced consumer products. Some of which include phthalates (hormone disruptors linked to birth defects), as well as octoxynols and nonoxynols (other hormone disruptors).

A Step Closer to Clean Beauty

Recently, California passed state law SB312 & AB2762 that mandate the disclosure of fragrance and flavor chemicals in cosmetic and personal care products. They also officially banned the use of 24 toxic chemicals – all of which are already banned in Europe and most are linked to breast cancer. These momentous pieces of legislation brings us a step closer to a clean beauty world.

Although there are many improvements to be made in beauty products, we are proud to source clean ingredients at Sonage and be part of the clean beauty community here in Los Angeles, California.
