Six Skincare Myths - Debunked

Most of us have been getting some sort of skincare advice since we were kids. Perhaps upon your first onset of acne, dryness or irritation you were searching up and down for solutions, and maybe still haven’t found them. Also, somewhere along the way you may have been given skincare advice that probably was not completely accurate. We’re here to help. For over 20 years we’ve had a successful commitment to your skin, and finding the safest, most natural solutions for a balanced complexion. This week, we’re clearing up six of the top skincare myths.

MYTH: MAKEUP WITH SPF COVERS THE SUNSCREEN STEP

It’s way past time to get serious about SPF. Not only for its power to fight against premature aging, but also to prevent various types of skin cancer.

So many people skip out on sun protection or they try to get away with a quick two in one step that isn’t necessarily effective. While wearing makeup with SPF is helpful, it shouldn’t be your only defense against harmful UVA and UVB rays. And yes, SPF should be worn even when it’s cloudy. The only way to truly protect your skin is with sunscreen, and regardless of the SPF level it should be reapplied every two hours. We get it, SPF is generally thought to be an oily lotion that leaves behind white residue or shine. This doesn’t have to be the case. Our Protec Plus Natural SPF 30 is refreshing, non-greasy and fast absorbing; using Red Algae and Macadamia for super protection and creating a perfect base for makeup.

MYTH: WRINKLES ARE GENETIC

While genes play a large part in the characteristics of your skin, they’re not the only factor.

Lifestyle choices play a much bigger role in determining how your skin will age. Avoiding factors such as sun exposure and smoking can make a world of difference. In addition to SPF, one of the most proactive methods of wrinkle prevention is an anti-aging moisturizer that works to deeply hydrate and regenerate the skin. Biosyl Peptide Booster from Sonage uses Hyaluronic Acid to plump and firm the skin, while using powerful peptides to alleviate the appearance of wrinkles.

MYTH: YOU CAN USE THE SAME MOISTURIZER FOR YOUR FACE AND EYES

You might be asking yourself if you really need to use a separate cream for your eyes. The short answer, is YES!  In theory, it might make sense to use your moisturizer as an eye cream. Skin is skin, afterall. However, even though the skin around our eyes is still skin, it is much thinner and more sensitive. Also, under eye concerns aren’t necessarily the same for the rest of our face, for example, dark circles. While an anti-aging moisturizer might share similar ingredients to an eye cream, they are often formulated to be heavier and using it around the delicate eye area can actually trigger more irritation and puffiness. Thin skin calls for lightweight, easily absorbable solutions. We recommend R&R Peptide Packed Eye Serum. Just like Biosyl, it packs in powerful peptides to alleviate signs of aging, but it’s formulated as a lightweight serum designed specifically for your under-eyes. Argireline, one of the five peptides in the serum, produces a Botox like effect, which relaxes the muscles to provide an ultra-rich intensive eye treatment.

MYTH: DRY SKIN NEEDS MORE MOISTURIZER

When your skin is dry, lathering it with moisturizer probably feels soothing and calming, at least for a little bit. While dry skin craves moisture, more doesn’t always mean better. Sometimes your skin may be craving a moisturizer with stronger ingredients. However, in many cases dry skin is actually caused by dead skin that hasn’t been removed. To remove dead skin and alleviate dryness, exfoliation is often the answer. Using an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) like Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid can gently renew the skin and enhance radiance. Glow to Go Glycolic Acid Peel Pads make exfoliating convenient with on-the-go peel pads that can be swept across very dry skin, and even oily skin, to improve a dull complexion.

MYTH: HEALTHY SKIN IS SQUEAKY CLEAN

Cleansing the skin is especially important, it’s one of the foundations of basic skincare. Many foaming cleansers also leave behind a squeaky, dry and tight sensation. This squeaky clean feeling is not synonymous with healthy skin. In fact, using harsh products that strip away your skin’s moisture barrier can actually cause damage to the skin. The key to truly clean and healthy skin is to use a gentle cleanser that can lift away impurities such as dirt and makeup, but still maintain moisture.

MYTH: SKIN ADAPTS TO PRODUCTS

You’ve probably tried products that worked great for the first few months of use, and then suddenly they seem to lose their effect. With skincare and with makeup, you’ve probably been told that your skin got used to the product and that you need to change your products and routine. While changing your routine is important, the underlying reason is because your skin itself changes. Your products haven’t stopped working, but with time, weather and even lifestyle, your skin can evolve, and your skincare routine should reflect that.
