All-Natural Dyes, A Sustainable Alternative To Synthetic Colorants

Sonage’s clean beauty philosophy has always been about utilizing the best of science and Mother Nature to give clients high quality and effective skin care without any harsh toxins or chemicals. This is why we’ve embraced natural colorants instead of artificial dyes in our cosmetic ingredients.

Artificial Fragrances & Dyes

Color is a powerful way of impacting people’s daily lives by adding visual appeal and vibrancy. Imagine if there was no color. We would miss out on a key element that makes our experiences memorable. Colors are also a source of information because they can influence our moods, feelings, and even our attitudes towards certain products. Recently there’s been a trend of brightly colored cosmetics, such as glitter-infused masks, which may seem like an appealing addition to your daily skin care routine compared to dye-free products. However, rising demand for natural products and well-being due to allergy incidents has us concerned about the chemical safety of cosmetic colorants. Every single combination of clinical and natural ingredients in our formulas is essential and has benefits for the skin. Even the color serves a purpose. Artificial dyes can irritate the skin, and their sole purpose is only for coloring. Most synthetic or artificial colorants are obtained from a type of petroleum known as “coal-tar.” Coal tar is a mix of toxic chemicals and has been recognized as a carcinogenic and endocrine disruptor over the years. Many colors that were once approved by the FDA are now being banned for this same reason. The alternative to toxic synthetic colorants that are traditionally identified as a color and a number (Yellow 5) is natural colorants that are beneficial for the body and environment.

Benefits of Natural Color

One of Sonage’s top priorities is product safety, and that’s why we use the appropriate preservatives and colors that don’t contaminate our earth and threaten our bodies. Hazardous cosmetic chemicals destroy our aquatic life, and many of them have been found in our water cycles. Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs whatever we put on it, so, the fewer the chemicals, the better. Our natural based products get their color from different natural skin care ingredients including essential oils, fruit, vegetable, and floral extracts. For example, our Facial Rinse is a calming alcohol-free toner that clarifies and refreshes skin and gets its attractive light green color from natural herbs like Neem, Eggplant, Sweet Basil and Turmeric. These ingredients have their own benefits including calming, and soothing the skin and removing excess oil. As well as the color itself, it also helps to counteract the appearance of redness and inflammation. Similarly, our other toner, the Hydrating Rinse gets its peach color from citrus and floral extracts like Hibiscus, Grapefruit, and Rose.

These ingredients are uplifting, oxygenating, energizing and they give dull, sallow skin a boost of circulation. If you’ve ever noticed that the color may sometimes vary in our product that is completely normal. Since we use ingredients from nature, different fruits and vegetables can differ in saturation and hue depending on factors like the fluctuation of climate or even the soil it was grown in. However, this does not indicate that the product is bad or the formulation has changed. Nature and color have unique qualities that can directly benefit our skin, and as the natural-organic cosmetic market continues to grow, it makes sense to demand the need for safety of color additives.
