Does Vaping Cause Acne?

Though many see vaping as a better alternative to smoking cigarettes, it still has health risks. Vape liquid is made up of four basic ingredients; water, nicotine, flavorings, and a propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin base. We know that nicotine can increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart attack. But what about the effects of nicotine on your skin?

Research has shown that vaping and skin health is definitely related, especially when it comes to breakouts. Here at Sonage, we're all about listening to our customers' needs in keeping their skin clear and healthy. That's why we're here—to clear up any misconceptions about the connection between vaping and acne.

Let's get started!

Does Vaping Cause Acne Breakouts?

Research has shown that any form of consumption (eating, vaping, or smoking) of nicotine or THC can negatively affect the skin.

The propylene glycol found in e-cigarettes, including vapes, causes dehydration of the oral (mouth) and dermal (skin) tissues. Dehydration can lead to increased sebum production as the body attempts to restore moisture in the skin. Consequently, those with acne-prone skin are more likely to develop acne vulgaris, a chronic skin disease that blocks or causes inflammation in the hair follicles and surrounding glands, when their sebum production is high.

Additionally, the smoke exhaled from vaping lingers around the face and draws out moisture from the skin. Dehydrated skin results in dull and uneven appearance. This results in the skin losing elasticity and becoming thinner. Any time there is an off balance in your skin barrier, breakouts are invited. The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin that shields and protects the face from any bacteria and toxins. If these breakouts are left untreated, they can worsen and develop even further.

Does Nicotine From Vaping Affect Your Skin?

The nicotine in vape liquid causes the narrowing of blood vessels, reducing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. If our skin is deprived of oxygen and nutrients, premature aging can occur. This deprivation also leads to dehydration and tired, dull looking skin. As we mentioned above, any time the skin is off balance, it fosters an environment for breakouts.

Does second-hand vaping cause acne?

While studies on the effects of secondhand vaping on the skin are inconclusive, being a passive vaper, meaning that you're exposed to the smoke even though you're not the one vaping, can result in similar effects as direct consumption.

How can you treat acne from vaping?

If you've noticed an increase in acne breakouts, our Zitlox Salicylic Acne Gel is the perfect treatment for your skin. Additionally, with the loss of moisture resulting from vaping, it's best to incorporate a moisturizing serum like our NMF Hyaluronic Serum to replenish your skin and hydrate.

A good routine includes using sunscreen daily, getting enough sleep at night, and moisturizing with a product formulated for your skin type is essential for treating your skin or preventing any vaping-induced breakouts.
