What Oils Are Good For Your Face? 5 Myths About Face Oils

If you are sensitive and/or prone to breakouts, it can be intimidating to add oils to your routine, especially if you don't know what oils are good for your face. Here are the most common misconceptions about face oils:

 1. Can Face Oils Clog Pores?

The thought of adding oil to blemish-causing oils sounds risky. However, we're here to tell you - face oils do NOT cause acne.

Yes, there are some oils like coconut oil that may clog your pores. But studies have shown that non-comedogenic (non-clogging) facial oils, like argan oil, can actually help reduce breakouts with it’s anti-sebum effects.

When your skin is unbalanced, it tends to over-produce sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture. There are non-comedogenic face oils that have antibacterial properties to help balance your skin moisture and regulate sebum production, which helps to prevent future breakouts.

2. Are Face Oils Bad For Oily Skin?

No! At least not the non-comedogenic oils. As mentioned earlier, face oils help reduce sebum production which means less unnecessary oil.

When your skin is dehydrated, it starts working overtime to produce more sebum oil. Overproduction of oil leads to clogged pores and breakouts. Facial oils help by providing necessary moisture to balance the skin’s sebum levels.

Just because your skin is oily does not mean you should avoid oils. In other words, oily skin types benefit from the use of face oils. Anyone can use facial oils, even those with sensitive skin! While face oils may not be the answer to how to get rid of clogged oil glands on face, it will certainly help regulate oil production to prevent breakouts.

3. Are Oil-free Products Safer for Oily Skin?

There are different reasons why some lean towards oil-free products - less shine, less breakout-prone and lighter consistency (especially for hot summer days). Those with oily skin tend to avoid oil-based products to avoid breakouts. However, oil-based products are not only for dry skin! While there are certain oils that are highly not recommended, oily skin types can greatly benefit from many non-comedogenic oils as they help to regulate sebum production and restore balance to the skin.

Ultimately, it is up to you whether to use oil-based products or not. If you’re new to face oils, argan oil or marula oil are safe to use for all skin types, even sensitive skin. However, if you feel that oils may aggravate your skin to cause breakouts, you may want to stick with oil-free products.

4. Are Face Oils Only Used In the Winter?

While summer calls for showing more skin, you’ve most likely replaced your ultra-hydrating oils with lightweight moisturizers. But you may want to reconsider as increased exposure to sun can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving your skin dehydrated aka more sebum production. That’s where face oils return, where they will fight free radicals and help quench your thirst during hot, summer days!

Though face oils are beneficial for all skin types during cold, brisk winters, some may feel apprehensive about using oils during the summer. Face oils are great and safe to use all-year round, even the hottest of days! If you have oily skin and don’t feel comfortable using face oils during the summer, consider swapping your oil with a lighter serum. Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid are great replacements (or additions) for keeping your skin nourished and hydrated.
